“The doctor of the future will give no medication, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, diet and in the cause and prevention of disease." ~ Thomas Edison
What is Functional Nutrition and Why Should I Try It?
The more people I talk to, the more I realize that most people don't know that they are looking for me when they find me. Many times, people know they are looking for of an alternative or holistic health approach. They know they don't want to follow another fad diet and they know something doesn't add up with their body and the way they are living. I would even go as far as to say that most of these people have a self-proclaimed “healthy lifestyle”. Therein lies the disconnect. A healthy diet, exercise routine, and lifestyle looks incredibly varied depending on the person. We want to think that if that person does x habit and looks or feels healthy that means it's healthy for me as well. The truth is that different types of foods, modes of exercise, and lifestyle habits are important for different people at different times. Through functional nutrition I've found that some of the most commonly accepted “healthy foods” are not right for certain people at certain points in their life. I've seen one person in particular who found through functional nutrition that almonds, eggs, apples, broccoli, honey, and olive oil among other things, were not healthy foods for him. Most of those are generally healthy foods wouldn't you agree? Not for him, at least not at that point in his life. Those foods actually did more bad for him than good.
Functional Nutrition works to eliminate the multitude of underlying causes of disease instead of treating the disease itself.
Functional Nutrition focuses on diet and lifestyle as prescriptions instead of medications.
When practicing functional nutrition the first premise is to test, not guess. Instead of focusing on symptoms or complaints given from the client/patient, functional nutrition calls for us to actually test the internal processes of the body. By doing so, we can identify dysfunction and attend to healing opportunities in the body. I've seen over and over again how people, even other health and fitness professionals, will hear a symptom and say, “Hey, you should try this! That worked for me”. Not that whatever their suggestion may not work, but there are many instances where that suggestion could make the person worse. This is why I value the the detective work in functional nutrition. You can't truly give someone the best care unless you know internally how their organ systems are functioning.
